Lightbulb Swap Outreach Program and More! Georgia Interfaith Power & Light
In response to requests from State Rep. Kathy Ashe, Georgia Interfaith Power & Light is launching an expanded LIGHTBULB SWAP OUTREACH PROGRAM, more than just changing light bulbs!
The goal of the LIGHTBULB SWAP OUTREACH PROGRAM is for your congregation to make connections with faith communities in underserved areas. We will help you provide them access to energy efficient products, but also to engage these communities in stewardship of God's Creation through worship and education. Throughout such areas in her district, Rep. Ashe has observed a lack of connection between daily actions and energy use. We want to change that!
GIPL is launching this initiative by inviting congregations involved in the Creation Keepers ministry to join us.
Here's how we can get started!
Practical steps your congregation can take:
1. Connect your congregation with one or more congregations in underserved communities.
2. Begin a dialogue with these congregations about Caring for Creation.
3. Engage the local congregation and your congregation in planning a light bulb swap in which both congregations will swap out old incandescent light bulbs for Compact Flourescent Light bulbs in the community.
4. Your congregation will fund the purchase of light bulbs and provide personnel to perform the swap, along with those from the local congregation.
5. Continue the dialogue about ways to Care for Creation, and ways to save money on energy bills. This might include programmable thermostats, weatherstripping or car pooling.
GIPL has prior experience with several large "Lightbulb Swaps", so let us help you with this outreach program. We swapped bulbs at Philips Towers Elderly High Rise in conjunction with Decatur Presbyterian Church and at Herndon Homes in conjunction with Antioch Baptist Church North.
How GIPL can help:
1. With Kathy Ashe's assistance, along with other GIPL connections, we will identify congregations which could benefit from this program throughout Georgia.
2. GIPL can provide help in beginning the conversation about the connection between energy savings and caring for God's Creation.
3. GIPL can provide sources for CFLs, programmable thermostats.
We need your help. For more information or to sign your congregation up for this program, please email Georgia Interfaith Power & Light at info@gipl.org!
